Roger VIEILLARD - Architecture II (Tour de Babel)

Pencil signed and titled; proof, from outside the numbered edition of 40; printed by the artist at Atelier 17, paris; on cream laid Vidalon; ex-collection Cathal O'Toole.

Vieillard was inspired to do this print after walking beneath the Eiffel Tower. He draws it from the inside as it soars to the sky. The image brings to mind Piranesi's Carceri series and Escher's strange structures. Vieillard's work was represented in the important 1944 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in New York titled "Hayter and Studio 17" which included 60 prints by 32 artists from 12 nations.
