Georg TAPPERT - Vagabundin (Female Vagabond)

Colour woodcut on Japan paper, 18 x 12.5 cm (block), 30 x 24 cm (sheet). Unsigned trial proof. Reference: Wietek 28. With the estate stamp signed by Annalise Tappert (the artist's third wife) on the verso.

Georg Tappert (1880-1957), who was one of the founders of the "Novembergruppe" in Berlin in 1918 and became an important representative of Expressionism, began his career - like many artists of his generation - under the spell of Art Nouveau. The very rare colour woodcut presented here cannot deny its influence by Japanese models. To further enhance the "japonistic" effect, Tappert refined his paper with a glittering substance that resembled the mother-of-pearl dust that was common in luxury ukiyo-e prints.
