Le chevelure de Bérénice I (1963) is a lithograph by Joan Miró, published by Maeght Éditeur in Paris in a limited edition of 75 on BFK Rives paper. The work takes its title from the ancient myth of Berenice’s Hair — the story of Queen Berenice II of Egypt, who vowed to sacrifice her long hair to the gods if her husband, King Ptolemy III, returned safely from war. When he did, she placed her hair in the temple of Aphrodite; the next day it disappeared, and the court astronomer declared that the gods had placed it among the stars as the constellation Coma Berenices.

Miró interprets this legend not through narrative depiction, but through abstraction. Floating signs and gestural lines suggest the strands of hair transformed into celestial light, uniting earth and sky. The restrained palette and airy composition reflect a sense of movement and quiet radiance. Printed with exceptional care and hand-signed by the artist, Le chevelure de Bérénice I embodies Miró’s lyrical approach to myth and his mastery of translating poetic ideas into visual form.
