Copy no. Rives / 30 – printed specially for Raymond Chassagne
A fine and complete example of the 1974 bibliophile edition of Milton’s Paradise Lost, Fourth Canto, illustrated with 10 original drypoints by Salvador Dalí, each hand-signed in pencil and numbered “Rives / 30”. This specific copy was printed specially for Raymond Chassagne, a designated recipient within the limited Rives vellum issue of the edition, making it a more desirable and historically traceable example.
The drypoints are beautifully printed in colour by hand at the Ateliers Rigal, showing exceptionally vivid, luminous hues and crisp line work typical of early pulls. Published by Les Bibliophiles de l’Automobile Club de France in an edition of 150 numbered copies, with additional nominative examples reserved for distinguished members.
All plates are printed on Rives wove paper and bear Dalí’s graphite signature and numbering. The portfolio preserves its complete suite of 10 plates, the original typographic title page, and the publisher’s chemise and slipcase. Typography was executed by hand in Imprint Corps 18.
This edition stands among Dalí’s most refined graphic interpretations of literary texts, blending Milton’s epic with Dalí’s highly controlled surrealist line. Complete, early-numbered Rives copies—especially those assigned to a named bibliophile, such as this one—are increasingly scarce, as many sets were later broken.
Condition: Sheets bright and clean, with strong, fresh impressions; minimal signs of handling. Chemise and slipcase with only light, discreet wear. A highly collectible, well-preserved example.
