Marc Chagall
Glasmalereien für Jerusalem / Windows for Jerusalem
Monte Carlo: André Sauret, 1962
Large quarto (32.5 × 24.4 cm), comprising 211 pages, complete with two original color lithographs by Marc Chagall, printed by Mourlot Frères, and numerous illustrations after the artist’s designs for the stained-glass windows of the Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem.
German edition. Publisher’s original binding with gilt lettering to the spine, preserved in the original illustrated dust jacket and original acetate protective wrapper; additionally housed in a custom-made protective slipcase.
This copy is distinguished by a full handwritten dedication by Marc Chagall on the title page, dated 1975 and inscribed:
“1975 / pour Thomas Banger / St. Paul / Marc Chagall”.
The inscription is executed in graphite, large in scale, and prominently placed across the title page, with a strong and fluid signature characteristic of the artist’s later period. “St. Paul” refers to Saint-Paul-de-Vence, where Chagall lived and worked during this period.
Referenced in Cramer (no. 49) and Mourlot (nos. 365–366), confirming its place within Chagall’s illustrated book oeuvre and the inclusion of the original lithographs.
Condition: exceptional. The volume remains in near mint to mint condition, with a fresh and clean interior and well-preserved lithographs. The dust jacket is in excellent condition, and the original acetate wrapper is present and intact with only minimal, expected signs of handling.
A superb and complete example of one of Chagall’s most important illustrated books, further enhanced by a fully legible and complete presentation inscription by the artist.
