Jeux de Dames (French for both “ladies’ game” and “checkers”) shows two elegant, partly undressed women in a private room. One sits with her back turned, the other looks straight out with arms raised and legs crossed, as if caught mid-conversation or in thought.
Bernard Buffet uses bold black lines, sharp angles, and muted tones to create a scene full of tension, intimacy, and style. The tall, thin figures — a hallmark of his expressionist style — bring out both the strength and vulnerability of the subjects.
The wallpaper and interior details, though simple, add a theatrical backdrop to the composition. The title hints at both a literal game and a symbolic one — of seduction, rivalry, or quiet power between the two women..
The work is in Excellent condition.
