Francis BACON - Francis Bacon , Portrait John Edwards, Russian Retrospective exhibit poster

Russian Retrospective Exhibition Poster After Study of a Portrait of John Edwards by Francis Bacon (1909 – 1992)

This poster was printed to advertise the first retrospective exhibition in Russia granted to a living artist since the Russian Revolution and was adopted by the State as a symbol of Glasnost. This exhibition provoked passionate and polarised responses in the national and international press.

The exhibition was organised by the British Council through its offices Moscow in collaboration with Marlborough Fine Art in London. It was held at the Central Union of Artists in Moscow from 22nd September to 7th November 1988.

Expecting the exhibition to be of limited appeal, it is reported that only 250 posters were printed. However, the appeal of the exhibition far exceeded the expectations of the organizers and it made the art establishment of Russia and its art-loving public acknowledge Francis Bacon as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.

It is believed that at the end of the show only 30 were left unused.

This is a poster that one could live with on a daily basis, so to say, as the Great Master appears to have infused an inner serenity and placidity into the image of John Edwards, who was a troubled and psychologically dislocated man, a man of inner turbulence and turmoil.

The contrasting colour combination, though striking rests easily on the eye and the Cyrillic writing enhances the graphics, thereby creating a slick and stylish poster.

When a catalogue of Francis Bacon’s posters comes to be written, as it surely will in the not-too-distant future, this poster will be recognised as one that introduced Bacon to the Eastern Bloc as of one of the major artists of the 20th century.

It is now not only very rare but also ranks as a must-have item for an avid collector of affordable Francis Bacon artwork and memorabilia.

This poster is a gem for a dedicated collector of art exhibition posters, especially in view of historically significant connotations.
